My name is Curtis Smith and I am from Arlington, Texas. I started playing
with flintknapping at around age 10. I got started because at a little bit
younger age I found out I had some Native American ancestry and got into the
Native crafts. I started doing bead
work, leather work, etc. Anything I could learn about. At around 15 years of age
I visited the Alibates National monument and finally got to see an experienced
knapper first hand. While in the area I picked up Whittaker's book
"Flintknapping; Making and Understanding Stone Tools" and that started my major
knapping. Over the years I have had the opportunity to get tips and help from
various knappers such as Gene Stapleton, Jim Redfern, Woody Blackwell, Bill
Metcalf, and numerous others. I am now able to
reproduce a variety of point styles and collect and sell tons of raw material at
several of the knap-ins in the southern central part of the USA. At 24 years of
age I am probably one of the few knappers in my age range with my level of
skill. I use mostly solid tip weight forward Genie boppers and copper pressure
flakers but can use just about any type tool fairly efficiently. At knap-ins I
usually like to play with other knappers tools and techniques.
