About me - Tim Ives

Greetings,

My passion for flintknapping sprouted in 1992 when I watched a Native artist manufacture a projectile point at a Connecticut Valley Powwow.  This encounter was a psychic benchmark in my personal history – something that I attribute to destiny rather than chance.  Armed with D.C. Waldorf’s The Art of Flintknapping, I spent subsequent years learning flintknapping basics while realizing my career goal of becoming an archaeologist, a profession that articulates well with my affinity for chipped stone technology.

I earned a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Connecticut in 1996, and an M.A. in historical archaeology from the College of William and Mary in 2001.  I have enjoyed a career as a professional archaeologist in New England’s cultural resources management industry for the better part of a decade, and am currently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Connecticut.  My academic interests include ethnohistory, experimental archaeology, and early Holocene occupation of the Northeast.  I have performed stone tool-making demonstrations in a wide range of public and educational forums throughout southern New England.

With the appropriate safety precautions, I encourage any and all to engage this universal human art.  Every knapping session is novel and offers an opportunity to appreciate immediate experience.  This art has helped me set my internal compass, and may serve a similar function for others.  Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Tim
