About me
- Avi Pogel
I have been knapping since 2001 and have had the good fortune to be taught by
John C. Whittaker. I graduated with a degree in anthropology and archaeology
from Grinnell College in 2006.
Knapping for me is a great form of relaxation and I feel a strong connection to
the stone and though the knapping process, humanities ancestors. I use a modern
tool kit of mostly copper but I prefer to percussion thin and pressure flake
opposed to lapidary techniques. I enjoy working with any good stone but some of
my favorites are British Flint, High quality Burlington, Midnight Lace Obsidian,
Knife River, and Georgetown flint. I also make atlatls and darts, as well as a
few knives.
As of March 2008 I will be living on Permaculture homestead on Orcas Is.
Washington. There I will practice traditional skills such as forest gardening,
building soil, knapping and hunting. On the Island my internet access will be
limited.
