Hello,
My name is Jim Winn. I am 58 years old, recently retired, and live in southern
California with my wife. I have always been interested in outdoor hobbies such
as hunting, fishing, hiking, flying, astronomy, etc. I also spend a lot of time
in our southwest deserts learning as much as I can about native plants, cactus,
reptiles, geology, Indian petroglyphs, etc. The further off the beaten path I
can get, the better!
My interest in flintknapping began shortly after I moved to Oregon in 1979. My
neighbor was an avid collector and took me on my first arrowhead hunt. I was
hooked! I spent the next few years actively hunting points. Some of the points I
found were incredibly well knapped, and I became determined to learn how it was
done. I discovered DC Waldorf’s book, “The Art of Flintknapping” and have been
knapping ever since!
I use the traditional methods of percussion and pressure flaking to knapp my
points. I never use flake over grinding. My tool kit includes both aboriginal or
traditional tools such as antler and stone percussors as well as more modern
tools such as copper. Recently I am moving toward using just aboriginal tools,
which is to me is more gratifying. Most of my points are knapped from spalls or
cobbles of chert, jasper, or obsidian.
Examples of my work can be seen in the 2005 and 2006 Flintknapping Calendars and
the Modern Lithic Artists Journal #1. Additionally, I performed knapping
demonstrations for the Discovery Channel, airing on 2 shows, Aztec Temple and
L.A. 10,000 BC, which aired in 2004 and 2005.
Over the years I have knapped most of the point styles found over North America.
I make everything from small delicate gem points to really large blades over 2’
long. If you have any questions or would like something custom made I can be
contacted at paleomanjim@yahoo.com
Shipping on 1 or more points under 8” long is $3 total. Between 8” to 12”
long $5. Points over 12” long will show actual shipping charges.
Thanks for checking out my work,.
Jim Winn
