This is a Hafted Celt. It is an authentic reproduction made 100% with traditional stone tools. The stone head was pecked into shape with another harder stone, then ground on a sandstone slab to sharpen, and polished to a finely honed edge with a piece of leather.
The handle is made from a piece of Dogwood originally cut with a stone axe and then shaped with stone tools. The roughly shaped handle was then scrapped with a shard of flint to completely smooth it down as if it were sanded, and several light coats of natural oils were applied to preserve the wood.
To test this tool I cut down a small White Oak tree around 7 inches across the stump, of which I will include photos of. When I say that my tools are like the originals in every way and meant to be used I totally mean it.
There is nothing fancy about this hafted celt. It is exactly like one from the lithic age. No fancy carvings on the handle or in the stone. Just an authentic reproduction axe that like the ancients I have nearly 80 hours in its creation. If you want a fancy decorative item this not for you, but if you want something made exactly like celts of long ago, that can be used, this celt is a must for your collection. |
