Unlike the tomahawk which was for warfare, the mighty celt was used specifically for chopping wood and the felling of trees and in this respect is an extremely efficient tool. Even with a small one such as this, I've personally toppled 8'' diameter trunks in under ten minutes with relative ease and little or no degradation of the stone head's edge. The secret to the celts success is in the selection of the proper materials, the shape of the head and its fitting in the handle, and how it's used. All are important but once mastered there is no end to its usefulness. Here we have a speckled granite head with a modestly beveled bit and keen edge which is fitted into a hardwood handle of unknown species (possibly ash) that has been hand carved, fire hardened, and oiled. |
