I made this point out of a pebble of tan flint that I collected in holland while walking along a path paved with crushed flint and chert. This and one other piece were the only chunks large enough to try to work. The pebble was only the length of the point and was about twice as wide. the rock had to be thinned considerably and in the end it turned out to be a pretty lethal little point.
The point is wrapped with silver plated copper wire which is soldered for security. Just a heads, the wire looses its silver coating and revreals a warm copper color. the string it is fastened to is black cotton with a double slip not to adjust to the size of your head and neck.
There's something oddly empowering about wearing a piece of jewelry that will last for thousands of years longer than any of us. Gold will inevitably be melted down to be reused, and other materials disintegrate over time. Nothing short of a rock crusher or a subducting plate will keep these pieces of art from existing until the end of time. Clovis points have been found imbedded in sediment that, over thousands of years, was converted into stone and preserved in the fossil record. The very first pebble tools, which were knapped millions of years ago are still around today, and they are just as sharp and as functional as when they were first made.
wearing an arrowhead around your neck is also good luck. an old legend tells of "fairy bolts" being thrown at people's hearts. If the points were caught before they touched the ground they would grant the owner good fortune. When the points touched the ground however, the magic left and the "bolts" became nothing more than rocks.
I hope this timeless piece brings you good luck. |
