Soapstone or Steatite pottery was used by the transitional woodland people in the Northeast. Whole vessels are super rare and command big dollars at auctions. Those searching the fields usually have a handful of Soapstone pottery pieces in their collections, but almost never have a whole vessel or even a significant portion of one. If you collect artifacts, now is the change to own a modern made one that was done in the traditional way. This pot is made from PA Soapstone, and was shaped with an Argillite hand tool. I purposely left this one out of perfect shape and did not smooth the tools marks off so that it looks like the authentic ones. The lugs on both sides are typical for Northeastern Steatite vessels. I also aged this pot to resemble the pieces I have in my collection. |
