I use hammerstones like these to do over 95% of my percussion flaking, and 100% of my abrading. Sandstone hammerstones are used for SOFT hammer percussion flaking on a variety of stones, and works especially well on brittle rocks like obsidian. Finding sturdy sandstone of the right consistency is difficult. However, I have discovered a source nearby. I know of several Southern California knappers that would travel all the way to Idaho for their sandstone hammerstones before this source was recognized!
