I love to create these! Not many artists are making them, which means they are rarely available.
Traditionally, arrow shaft straighteners were heated in a fire until very hot, and then warped arrow shafts were drawn across the stones groove to make the shaft more pliable. The wooden shaft could then be easily straightened. Within seconds the shaft would cool and hold to its new position. These were more commonly used with shafts made from reeds like phragmites. I have used these stones to straighten phragmites shafts, and have been astounded by how well they work. It is like magic!
Each one that I create has an original design/makers mark.
This straightener has been signed, dated and preheated by James K. Bowden. |
