-Welcome to The Pipecarver, offering Hand Carved Native American Style Pipes, knives, and much more, by Pipe Carver, Jay Rather .
Jay has been carving, knapping, pecking, (and according to his wife, "making a racket"), for 15 years, in the Hill Country of Texas.
You will find his T-Pipes, Effigy, Platform, Disc, Tube, Elbow, Tomahawk, Mic Mac Pipes and more styles in his gallery. If you don't see a particular style, ask, he may very well have it, or will make it for you.
Jay predominantly uses Catlinite, Steatite, or other "pipestones" found in the Native American pipes of the past. This stone can be found in, red, black, green and other colors, and in a combination of colors. Stone can be a singular color ranging from dark to light , and in varying shades of a particular color. None better than the other, it's just a matter of preference.
Inclusions in some stone make for an interesting array of patterns, streaks, and occasionally form to make a shape resembling something from nature. You never know for sure when something will appear as the layers are removed in carving. Surprises like that are a gift from the Creator, and it's fun to discover them.
Jay also creates pipe stems from various materials and styles. His pipe stems are known for their advanced technique, including puzzle stems, all stone stems, and his popular, carved cedar stems with many symmetrical twists or a combination of twists and flats. Stems alone,(without pipes), are usually available for purchase, too.
One will also find that Jay has a love of knives. His knives range from a primitive type of knife, to knives using traditional materials, but with a more modern outcome. He uses a wide variety of materials for blades and handles. He also crafts leather sheaths.
Jay creates a host of other museum quality reproductions such as banner stones, amulets, gorgets, pendants, celts, axes, war clubs, and so much more. He is enamored with all Native American art forms, and loves to study and replicate similar creations.
Jay's work have been purchased by collectors, museums, universities and other educational institutions, and the motion picture industry. He is very honored that so many Native Americans have purchased his pipes for personal and ceremonial use, and to gift family and friends. His work has sold throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Most of his customers become returning customers. Thanks Ya'll :-)
He has a website which has a sampling of his work and son Lance's work. (Fantastic Effigies). Most has been sold, but some are available, and he may have something very similar listed for sale elsewhere. He'd be happy to move an item to this site, and does custom work as well.
